[2.0 devtest] Laser shots only destroy max 20 blocks
Steps to reproduce:
  • spawn in the chair of the attached blueprint
  • wait for the laser to charge
  • shoot at the HA line

The laser does ~280K damage/shot fully charged, with 81 AP.
Only destroys 20 HA beams, total damage 120K. On replacing the beams with wooden ones still only 20 is killed, total damage 21600.

No matter what Draba is trying to do, there's a bug.
A very powerful laser cannot even destroy more than 20 wood beams in one shot, that really needs to be fixed.

Good find on that one, but now I fear for my ships, let's hope the AimPoint card will not be able to target the mainframes in the future... Wink

Aimpoint was always nerfing your own vehicle against people who knew what they were doing, wouldn't worry about it one bit.

Summed up:
- any combination of stacked smokes + shields is a practically perfect defense
- aimpoint will go for single disposable ammo storages sprinkled throughout the ship before targeting the AI
- putting the AI underwater means it's practically immune to lasers
- lasers can't reliably hit a 5x5 area at 1000m+ without a really silly amount of focusing optics anyway

Just take 1 second to actually understand what I've written.
A 150K material cost doomray also gets stopped by 20x 50 HP tailplanes.
Lasers are bad enough without this mechanic.

PAC shots apparently suffer the same issue. The attached blueprint is a 625240 damage pierce PAC that only pens 10 wooden beams per shot. According to scarlet the 20 block per shot limit on lasers is intentional from Nick's end (but was told in the past that it was going to be changed / fixed ), and khaz is of the impression that the number is 10 (which it seems to be per pierce PAC shot).

That's my question, too: if casting more on each beam would be too slow it's not a crippling limitation.

From a gameplay perspective a single 20-30 RPM beam going through everything is not that strong though.
It doesn't even have the annoyance factor of current piercing PACs since it's relatively easy to defend against
(the usual lineup: useless when shooting below water, can miss, loses power with distance, shields/smoke laugh at it).

Its because 20 is enough, have to draw a limit somewhere, it used to be 10 and now its 20, it wont be 1000 in the future, 20 is enough Smile
