RE: What is your Faction/Fantasy world like?
Noble Republic of Adria Anyone ?

( )

I first came up with it last year, and it can be based on a real life occurrence after a Christian loss in the battle of Lepanto as part of an Alternate History, an Indipendant Nation in Space, or a Fantasy Nation in the Falcon Chronicles universe.

In Alternate History:

Noble Republic of Adria

The Noble Republic of Adria was the successor of the Republic of Venice, and existed between 1598 and 1926 in the areas of today’s Dominions of Eastern Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and parts of Macedonia. The country was known for it´s progressive Scientific community, the strong cohesion between it´s three estates consisting of Nobility, People and Knights, it´s warlike and early enlightened society and it´s strong Nationalism. The Traditions and the Spirit of the former Republic are still uphold today by it´s numerous successor Dominions, which share not only a common ancestry, but a strong faith into the republican ideas.

Origin, Early History and Cultural Overview of the Noble Republic of Adria:

After the Holy League lost the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, the Ottomans conquered most of the Balkans and the whole eastern and northern shore of the Adriatic Sea, Including the Merchant Republic of Venice. On August 1st 1572 the city´s churches were plundered in what would become known as "the rape of Venice". Seeing such violence being out carried against fellow Christians, the European Christendom united once again under the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor in a second effort to drive the Ottomans back, leading to the great Turkish Crusade. The Crusade lasted for about 26 years, and saw a christian victory in 1598 as the Ottomans were driven back into Asia minor, and were forced to surrender their christian lands in the treaty of Cyprus.

The war had united the once occupied peoples of the Adriatic coast , and the remaining noble families decided to take matters in their own hand. The Noble Republic of Adria was conceived as a fortress to defend the People and the Nobility of the Adriatic coast against any ottoman advances in the Future, and to uphold the values of freedom and enlightenment in a time when monarchies were the most common form of government.

The Plague of 1575 never took place, since trade was simply nonexistent during the war, while the plague of 1629 was successfully Quarantined before reaching the capital city of Venice. The power and sheer size of the Noble Republic prevented it from ever loosing a grip on the Mediterranean trade, and with the Ottomans being driven back the noble republic was de facto in absolute control of the Mediterranean sea. The colonial efforts of the major European powers were a lot less powerful since there was no need to overcome an Ottoman monopole on eastern goods. The following centuries were centuries of wealth and prosperity for the Noble Republic. The American victory in the war of Independence was widely celebrated. Industrialization started in 1799.

As the Noble Republic has never been large enough to contest with the Numerical power of states like France or England, The Adriatic people has since then relied on Patriotism, ceaseless devotion and superior firepower to defend their republic. The Ideology of republican fascism preaches the "Liberation of the World", a doctrine which has its roots in the believe that the Peoples of the world are oppressed by Tyrannical Monarchs and corrupt Politicians which care little for them, and thus must be liberated.

The State itself consists of the usual three branches of government. The legislative branch consists of the People's' Parliament and the Noble Parliament. The Peoples' Parliament, which is inescapable Charge of Föderalismus affairs, represents the overall populace of The Noble Republic, whereas the noble Parliament, which is in charge of state level affairs and thus eligible to review the legislation passed by the People's' parliament and to Veto said legislation wherever it interferes with state rights, hosts the Noble deputies of the 21 Principalities and the Grand Duchy of Venice.

The executive branch consists of the Two Archchancelors voted by the People's' Parliament, the Margrave Majesty of the Grand Duchy of Venice and the Chapter Master of the Knights Vattistan. It can propose legislation, has the supreme command over the whole Adrian Military and also acts as the head of state. Each decision in this council has to be passed by a majority of 3/4 to come into effect.

The Noble Court is situated in the Principality of Treviso, and consists of the three chiefs of justice. Two of them are appointed by the People's' Parliament and the Noble Parliament respectively, whereas the third is usually appointed by either the Order of the Knights Vattistan or the Noble Academy of Ragusa.

The official National Motto of the Noble Republic of Adria is "Alzati, voi che rifiutano di essere schiavi." ("Arise, you who refuse to be slaves"). The National Language is Italian, but many languages which are traditionally native to the Adriatic Coast are accepted as well. The Patron Saint of the State is Valentine Vattista, the Knight which lead the Adrian Armies in the Battle of Treviso in 1582.

The Knights Vattistan are the Sacred order of Knights that Aspire to prove their Devotion to the Adriatic State by deeds of great Valor and acts of self sacrifice. The Order is the most prestigious of the different Orders Chivalrous, and only accepts the most devoted Nobles and commoners into its ranks. Since there is no active Monarchy in the Noble Republic, The Chapter Master of each order Chivalrous is eligible to grant knighthood to whomever he personally sees fit. The fact that the behavior and mannerisms of each knight is directly connected to its order however prevents the Chapter masters from appointing individuals that don't manifest the values asked of an Adriatic knight. Knighthood is a high social Rank in the Noble Republic, but one that is largely without political participation. A Knight is also obliged to fight in as many wars and battles as he is able to, which leads to knighthood being a rather unhealthy Profession in most cases.

The Military consists of travel Navy, the Army and The Air Force, and thus isn't very extraordinary. What however is extraordinary, is the position of Knights within the military. A detachment of an Order Chivalrous can be attached to any Formation at any time, and directly answers to its highest officer without any regards to any other present officers. Knightly Detachments are also exclusively armed with the newest Equipment available, and oftenly field-test Equipment that hasn't entered mass production yet, which ensures that a Knightly detachment will meet the enemy with not necessarily the best, but the Most unexpected Equipment available.
