Eagle Industries presents: Conquest class light destroyer

Welcome to Eagle Industries, a startup company that brings you the best brand spanking new military hardware out there. If you're looking for an honest, environmentally responsible product; you've come to the right place!

The fleet
All ships, submarines and flying machines are designed around a realistic, near-future tech style. As they are a representation of current and near-future tech, a number of design constraints are in place. Every ship is designed for a specific task in the fleet, be it naval bombardment, patrol, Anti-Air, anti-submarine, et cetera. Individual ships often excel at one or two tasks, but are inferior to others and thus need supporting. Furthermore, realistic design also imposes limits on the amount and kind of weapons used. I dislike the use of fast firing high gauge guns, or a ship that has every last bit of space used for offensive or defensive weapons. Every ship also has a trade-off in armour, so that it can remain reasonably bouyant without fear of submerging parts of the deck or even weapons during normal operations. Engine design is based around fuel efficiency. A ship gets the most fuel efficient engine it can support, since maritime operations require ships to be independent of refueling and restocking for long periods of time. Being near-future tech ships, LAMS are used, but offensive weapons are ruled out and the use of shields is limited. LAMS are furthermore underpowered, and need to stock in energy first since the limited engine power doesn’t allow for large LAMS installations to be used.

The only exception on the eco-friendly engines are on aircraft, since they usually don't have the space for a huge engine that only has a limited output, but even they should have more than a combat durability of around an hour or more (if they last that long). Furthermore, aircraft also use shields more.

With many of the Eagle Industries ships already available, it is now time to make available one of the true workhorses in the catalogue, the Conquest class light destroyer.
She is one of the oldest ships in the fleet, built to overcome the Supremacy's initial problems with dealing with submarines and aircraft. The request came for a ship that wasn’t as big as the Supremacy, but had comparable armour. It also was required to be as quick and manoeuvrable as the Triton, and had both decent anti surface ship capabilities as well as anti-air and submarine. The result is a light destroyer, with decent anti sub capabilities, and decent anti-air. It’s best used against small to medium targets without much offensive capacity, as the Conquests armour isn’t meant for heavy punishment.

The Conquest is a support ship and has evolved to become a jack of all trades. She'll perform well against most types of enemies, but will usually be at a disadvantage against similar sized, specialized enemies. Use her as she's designed, however, and she'll prove her rightful place in the fleet.

RE: Eagle Industries presents: Conquest class light destroyer
This one, I'm not sure about - half the missiles are slow & the front gun muzzle velocity is also quite low; what craft are you really aiming it at? ( ie, example target craft ). I think if you're going to make a specialist craft it should go all the way - it's not like fast missiles or high-velocity guns are useless against slower craft. Airships & similar thrustercraft don't need dedicated units so I'd not build for them at all.

Poke my boat! pre-2.0 learning & catalogue thread - 6 ships made 2.0 aware. Regularily doing other things until the eye-strain post-processing can be disabled again; great game but not worth the literal headache.

It's a jack of all trades really. The forward missiles are AA, the aft missiles are Anti-Ship. The front gun is general purpose, best suited against similar sized, relatively slow craft. The aft gun is AA, but on it's own it doesn't do much.

Like I stated in the description, she's a support craft. I've found this ship to be a decent alrounder; she doesn't really excel at anything, but a few of them in a fleet can at least do some hurt against subs and ships.

I built this ship to overcome the Supremacy's initial problems with aircraft and subs, as it has no torpedoes and the guns fitted used to be 250mm guns with a horrible firing rate and shell speed... It even started out its life with CRAM cannons, which were even worse.

Over time, as the Supremacy had its guns upgraded, this ship has begotten a bit bland, and doesn't really shine at anything but pretty much does a bit of everything.

RE: Eagle Industries presents: Conquest class light destroyer
Does it really need any primary anti-ship given all the other stuff in the fleet? accurate high velocity weak shells/missiles are also quite good at pinpoint hits on ship components even if they don't make big holes by themselves.

The prox fuse is a nice idea also, but I think I'd put another fin on instead & try and actually hit the target - prox fuses only look straight ahead anyway.

Well there may be times in which there won't be other ships in the fleet purposely designed to provide anti-ship support? And having a decent all rounder capable of engaging multiple target types can be a very useful asset in certain situations.

RE: Eagle Industries presents: Conquest class light destroyer
The gun is also only Anti-Ship insofar as the enemy ships are unshielded and don't boast a whole lot of armour. Arguably, it's better suited at taking out helicopters/gunships.

That said, I did make some alterations based on your comments. The barrel of the main gun is a bit longer, allowing a higher shell speed, better accuracy and better range. I also fiddled with the shell itself, having a bigger boom with less squash now.

The AA-missiles have also been changed, moar fins, in exchange for the prox fuse.

You're correct. Especially my mid-game fleets heavily rely on the offensive power of the Conquest, before the Supremacy and other ships are in force...

Yeah, which is why all mine have a light turret with high velocity rounds - I found I needed a specialist unit when I started fighting LH because they have some quite fast heavy air units & it was taking forever ( or I ended up changing missiles on the fly, which I don't like doing ). My own anti-ship philosophy is basically torpedoes anyway, which anything can carry - even my AAA vessel with the excuse that it can shoot them at downed aircraft.

For anything other than faster large fliers you don't need specialist weapons, so it'd be the AAA unit that's usually missing - carrying around specialist weapons when they're never going to be properly used doesn't seem a grand idea.

True, but not entirely true. My preferred Anti-Ship weapons are 200-250mm rapidfire guns. However, they are performing less well against Thrustercraft/Airships as a twin barrel 140mm gun with the same turret internals. The 140mm usually does less well against ships.
The difference isn't great, but it's there. Which is why my alround guns tend to be 2-3 barreled, and under 140mm. My anti-ship weapons are above 200mm, with 200mm for the Vanguard and the Intrepid, 250mm for the Themis and 300mm for the Overlord.

RE: Eagle Industries presents: Conquest class light destroyer
The Conquest has been updated and a new version has been uploaded to the OP. A number of changes have been made to improve on her combat performance, which was lacking in the old version.
The following changes have been made:
- Updated missile loadout, range of both the AA and ATG/ATA missiles has increased, as well as a better performance for the AA missiles.
- Moved the ammo storage to the stern, improving the durability of the ship.
- Placed a new AA gun with more firepower (80mm vs 70 mm on the old, and 240 rounds/minute on the new gun vs 120 rpm on the old, and changed the shell to frag
- Moved the AI, it is now better protected against enemy fire as well as better EMP protection.

As a result of these changes, combat metric has increased from 52 to 88, it is also now capable of destroying the larger and more expensive Supremacy class frigate.

Hey Eagle, since I'm terrible at turret Tetris and I find it the most mundane task in the game along with engine building, I've copied the secondaries and deck mount weapons of your craft, I'll be sure to credit you when the cruiser is done.
